This includes at least one miss in all four playoff games.

29 of 62 games they have missed atleast at least one kick (47%)

8 of 62 games they have missed 2 or more kicks in a game (13%). They have had FIVE different kickers miss multiple kicks in a game in this span. Carlson, narveson, McManus, havrisik, and Trey Smack.

In total, they are 78% on field goals and 92% on extra points since the start of 2023. Absolutely putrid. An organizational failure.

It has been harder to replace Mason Crosby than it was to replace Aaron Rodgers.

Good kickers are hard to find. You can scout power and accuracy but you can't predict consistency or clutch

It feels a lot like drafting and developing goalies in the NHL. It feels like a position where you're just legitimately throwing shit at a wall to see what sticks.

One guy might get drafted, look incredible in training camp, spring training and the entire season...and then suddenly the next season you're double checking to make sure he didn't put his shoes on the wrong feet before going out to kick the ball, and he just never recovers.

Will Reichard and Jesper Wallstedt on the Wild have saved my life in this way. Those positions have great longevity as well. So many years of struggling at those positions for us.

The Wild have definitely been in need of a goalie. I'm trying to think of the last time they had remotely solid goaltending and it might have been...Dubnyk? The fact that I can't remember goalies between now and then probably isn't a great sign, but could also just be my ignorance.

It's always so weird to see in players. As a Blues fan, it was wild seeing the whole 2019 run where they get a Stanley Cup...all because Jordan Binnington told fucking goalie legend Brodeur that he wasn't getting sent down and essentially forced them to play him as the team was playing like garbage and needed a goalie to step up. Guy goes from nearly being sent down from the already low league he was in to becoming a Stanley Cup winner and starter.

Always makes you wonder how many solid goalies just never got their shot because a team didn't start them or because the team they were on didn't have a good pipeline for developing them.

Dubnyk was fine but let in so many softies that it drove me crazy. Backstrom back in the day was a dude, but besides that no real long term guys. Although Gustavsson was a nice surprise when we got him and still a great backup option that would start on a lot of teams. I was ecstatic when we drafted Wallstedt after the Oilers passed on him. He’s definitely lived up to his generational goalie prospect status thus far.

Which is weird because being a goaltender in hockey is one of the most dynamic and athletically demanding sports positions imaginable because there's constant rapid puck movement and a couple of inches of misprecision as you aggressively slide 4ft on slippery ice on your knees to cover a 90mph cross slot one timer can be the difference between an amazing save and a back breaking goal. And so it makes sense that it would be an incredibly unpredictable position for drafting because being even a tenth of second too slow or even 1% too imprecise in your movement can mean going from a great minor league goalie to being a complete sieve in the pros.

Whereas fg kickers just need to be able to consistently kick a stationary ball at a stationary target, and so ignoring the occasional rare missed block, it feels like it should be a relatively consistent and predictable process and one of the easiest positions to scout. But in reality it ends up being wildly inconsistent for some reason.

While I can’t deny that goaltending is a much more complicated, athletic job, it’s very much instinctive muscle memory driven work where the goalie gets into a flow state and reacts to whatever is in front of him. There’s not any time to overthink it.

Whereas kickers are brought out with everybody focusing on them, and the kicker has to handle a minute of intense scrutiny without overthinking things and second guessing themselves. It’s also not completely static — winds, thermals, atmospheric conditions like humidity and density altitude all affect kick trajectory, for example.

Which is why I have to laugh when a section of Bears fans scream that Santos should be cut after he missed on Thursday. I asked on one of those threads who is currently available that is better, because there really aren't other better options out there right now.

He then proceeded to boot the 58 yarder to seal the win.
