I still think Canales is a good coach, but that's quite a stat lol

I feel like they are still in a rebuild but Canales raises their floor to a point where they look more like an inconsistencies team

Said in another comment but I feel like the roster in general has almost zero depth, and we’ve had a lot of injuries to key positions this year. It’s still very much in a rebuild which is why Dan Morgan didn’t go out and grab a competent corner when Jackson and Horn went down. No reason to leverage the future when he knows the roster needs a long term plan.
I don’t think Canales is a savant but he’s keeping us from being at the bottom of the league right now.

well this is year 3 for Canales so by this point, the floor should be a bit stabalized
Part of those inconsistencies might be tied to being among the worst defenses in the modern era (and ever?) and doing everything short of personnel changes to try and address it.
This team will never be consistent if fielding anything about a backup level QB means the opposition has a 50% chance of posting their season (franchise?) highs in rushing yards, TDs, points scored, and/or scoring a last minute TD to regain a lead

Here’s a fun fact about Evero.. prior to his hiring the Panthers allowed 200+ yards rushing 8 times as a franchise (28 seasons.)
With him at DC it’s happened 12 times going back to the start of the 2023 season.

I hate his soft zone bullshit. Feels like trying not to lose rather than trying to win. Hopefully we finally get rid of him soon. I am happy with canales and idzik overall though.

Soft zone can be fine but the talent needs to be there. Fangio has made it work and won a SB with a dominating defense because of it but they had all-pro caliber talent at all levels and even the back-ups because high paid starters elsewhere

Yeah we're working with a fourth round rookie, and maybe the worst cb I've ever seen. Our two corners who were a top 5 pair both got injured in the browns game. So you cant really make the same scheme work, and evero seems incapable of making adjustments.

Heavy injuries this year too aren’t helping
12. u/big4lil · 2026-10-26 19:10 UTC
for sure, injuries always play their part
though teams deal with injuries every year. its part of the game
once you are in year 4 as a DC, you should be expected to field a scheme that doesnt turn into legendarily bad because of player injuries. there are other DCs that have had injuries that dont end up surrendering record setting numbers

I’m not defending the DC??? The week before the bye the Panthers had 40% of their cap injured and out. You can’t gameplan for that

He is also doing a good job of developing Young as compared to his rookie season.

I’m impressed they’ve entered six games with a winning record
16. u/GamingTatertot · 2026-10-26 18:48 UTC
They entered Week 8, 10, 12, 15, and 17 last year with a winning record. And then only Week 7 this year so far

He's a good dude, but a good coach? I dunno.

I’ll push back on the good dude part too. He who constantly cheated on his wife at bars (read his autobiography) until he “found Jesus” and realised he should stop with infidelity because it’s looked down upon in the Bible
