The calls were bad but this is the guy that actually lost the Packers the game

Second one was blocked but the first one was just a head scratcher.

There is no reason to be kicking it that low from a chip shot

4. u/NeverSober1900 · 2026-10-26 17:01 UTC

Exactly. It wasn't insane pressure. Get more lift on it it was a chip shot

It was blocked because it was a bad kick

Yeah people talk like, "the kick was blocked" absolves the kicker of any responsibility. Good kickers kick the ball with a trajectory that it's too high to get blocked at the line of scrimmage. Especially on short field goals where they don't need to put all their leg into getting the distance, the ball should be much higher than that kick was.

The only time a kicker can be absolved is if a guy bursts through the line or beats them around the edge to get in front of a kick and destroy a play completely. A guy jumping and getting enough of a hand on it is on them

Yeah, or maybe if the snap is kind of bad and the holder can’t get it placed correctly, you might not blame the kicker in that situation. Don’t think that was the situation for Smack

Even then, sometimes a kickers wind up takes too long and allows the block to happen.

Eh if it's an extremely long kick they might need a lower departure angle to get the distance, but not on a short kick.

guy bursts through the line

This is how you get your hands on the ball though. This doesn't absolve the kicker, but it also doesn't absolve the line-man who got run-through or the blocking player who got into the backfield to get it done.

If you watch the video, the Lion who gets his hand on the ball is 2 yards into the backfield (the ball is snapped at the 18 and blocked at the 20)

I think that's the issue Smack is going through right now. He's got a boomer of a leg, but he seems to struggle to reign it in on field-goal and closer distances. He's a drafted rookie so he's going to get a longer leash. Hopefully he can fix that part of his game during the year.

can tell you from experience, not true at all

I didn’t know Tyler Loop could kick over 50+ until the Rio Dallas game and wanted him gone so it’s sometimes true. You just have to earn the leash back after losing it lol which is why Jake Moody is back on our practice squad

mate Aguayo missed 5 out of his first 11 kicks over 6 games with a missed xp in there. if he was brought in as an FA on a minimum contract, he'd have been gone. that's literally the longer leash we're talking about.

Tbf he was a second round pick

As a Packers fan who went through all this in 2023 with our 6th round pick Anders Carlson, can co-sign.

Carlson was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fifth round (167th overall) of the 2018 NFL draft.[10] He was one of two kickers to be selected that year, the other being Jason Sanders by the Miami Dolphins.[11]

In the offseason, he competed with veteran kicker Kai Forbath. Forbath was released by the team on August 20, 2018.[12] Carlson made his NFL debut in the season-opening 24–16 victory over the San Francisco 49ers and converted all three extra point attempts and a field goal attempt.[13] In the next game against the Green Bay Packers, he missed a field goal in regulation and two in overtime, resulting in a 29–29 tie.[14] The following day, Carlson was waived and replaced by veteran Dan Bailey.[15]

2 games.

Matt LaFleur effectively iced his own kicker by not calling a timeout to avoid the delay of game penalty

i was listening to the radio and Rock, packers color guy, was joking about an old coach or player that use to say "more room to work with" and then he missed the FG lol
