[Highlight] Jason Kelce says he loves fat linemen pushing the ball carrier forward for a 1st down. When Kurt Warner asks him why they gotta be fat, Kelce replies: "Well, they are. I was one of 'em. I'm grandfathered in. I can say it."

He also called himself morbidly obese last week too and Kurt Warner was like “you were just husky” and Kelce was like, “No, I was FAT”.

On a BMI scale, Kelce at 300 lbs or so probably is close to morbidly obese. Obviously, that doesn’t take into account that he’s strong as hell, muscular, and does a ton of cardio playing football.
He’s also a guy that probably had to eat a lot to keep weight on (he came into the league undersized), so during his playing days probably felt fat af.

It’s also something where you need to lose a bunch of weight when you stop playing or you will just be fat. Think it is one reason linemen have such a low life expectancy.

It’s hard to go from eating 10,000 calories per day your whole life to 3,500.

For your mother maybe, but for Joe Thomas it was extremely easy

Retirement meant that he no longer needed to use food to cope with the unbearable sadness that comes from playing on the browns

On my lift days I aim for 2500+ calories and 150+ grams of protein and that in itself feels like a job. Couldn’t imagine what linemen put their bodies through. Probably eating like Goku out there

Most linemen try to drink as many of their calories as possible.
Protein shakes, yogurt with protein powder added, specialty snacks that are dense in calories…
I’ve read Olympic athletes on a budget often feast on Taco Bell. Calorie-dense at a fairly-inexpensive cost.

T bell is unfortunately no longer cheap

Feels like it’s mandatory to have an eating disorder to play lineman

I forget who it was but a retired olineman talked about his meal plan but it was a disgusting amount of food and he would finish it with a pint of Ben and Jerry's. Every single day.

3500 a day when retired is still fat
15. u/Old_Cycle1346 · 2026-10-25 15:21 UTC
3500 a day is reasonable intake if you're working out hard even 3 times a week
16. u/milbriggin · 2026-10-25 16:09 UTC
if you're 6'5 and 300 lbs sure. and if you're 300 lbs you're fat, no way around it.
see here
if you're not a retired nfl player and you're eating 3500 calories/day you're fat, and again there's really no way around it. even an overweight avg american male (5'10, 175) is sitting at 2700/day maintenance at 3-4 hard workouts a week.

I am a small woman (120lbs) and train for endurance running and cycling. I worked with a sports dietitian and I need to eat 3000+ calories per day to not send myself into REDs.

That is the opposite of being retired
19. u/ablebody_95 · 2026-10-25 17:24 UTC
My point is that these dudes, even retired, are still large human beings (tall and large framed) and most still maintain some level of activity. 3500 kcals isn’t that unreasonable.

3500 a day is perfectly fine if you're a gigantic human being, which linemen generally are.
